يتميز كتاب الوقاية من الجريمة بالمسح الموسوعي للموضوعات وبالتوثيق العلمي لمواضيع متشعبة تلامس المجتمعات الإنسانية جمعاء، كل ذلك في لغة بسيطة تشرح العلاقة المعقدة بين الجريمة والسلوك الإنساني. فهو واحد من الكتب القليلة التي تجمع بين الاهتمام بالمستوى النظري للسلوك الإجرامي وبين المعالجة العملية للانحراف بشكل عام والجريمة بشكل خاص.
ولا غرابة أن لَقي كتاب الوقاية من الجريمة القبول في الأوساط الأكاديمية في أرجاء العالم وفي الكليات التي تُعنى بتدريس علم الجريمة، فقد أدى الطلب عليه وإعادة طباعته لأكثر من مرة، إلى إغنائه من حيث المحتوى وأسلوب العرض وتنوع الموضوعات والبنية العامة لمحتوى الكتاب. لقد ساهم كل ما تقدم في إثراء الطبعة العاشرة التي تبنت جامعة نايف العربية للعلوم الأمنية نقلها إلى العربية، رغبة منها بالرقي في دراسات علم الجريمة والوقاية منها، وفي إثراء المكتبة العربية في هذا المجال التخصصي الذي قلما التفتت إليه الجامعات العربية بهذا التوسع والعمق.
يقدم الدكتور ستيفن لاب في هذا الكتاب مراجعة علمية لمجالات الوقاية من الجريمة وتطورها في الغرب منذ القرن الحادي عشر الميلادي، مع التركيز على مبادرات وبرامج الوقاية في العقود الخمسة الماضية. كذلك تُلْقي فصول الكتاب الضوء على الجهود الرسمية والمجتمعية والبحثية في المجالات المختلفة للوقاية من الجريمة، بما يشمل تصميم المدن، وعلاقة الإعلام بالجريمة، والجريمة في الجوار وفي المدارس، والعلاقة بين الجريمة والمخدرات والانحراف، مؤكداً في كل هذا على ضرورة الانخراط المجتمعي في مكافحة الجريمة، وعلى تقييم جميع الدراسات والجهود الرامية لمكافحة الجريمة. فكتاب الوقاية من الجريمة ضروري لكل من الطلاب والباحثين في مجال علوم العدالة الجنائية وعلوم الجريمة وعلم الاجتماع والعلوم الأمنية.
